A Praia do Norte esteve à conversa com Justine Dupont. A atleta, que está representada na Surfer Wall do Forte de São Miguel Arcanjo, já foi vice-campeã mundial em surf de ondas grandes, stand up paddling e longboard.
Como descreves a tua ligação com a Praia do Norte?
How do you describe your connection to Praia do Norte?
É um lugar que eu realmente adoro. Tem muitas caras diferentes. Lembra-me o lugar onde morávamos em França, mas talvez há 15 anos. Para mim, é o melhor lugar para treinar o surf de ondas grandes. É onde eu vi a maior onda jamais surfada.
It is a place that I really love. It has a lot of different faces. It reminds me where we lived in France but maybe 15 years ago. For me it is the best place to train for big waves surfing. It is where I have seen the biggest wave ridden.
Vives na Nazaré durante bastante tempo todos os anos. Comprar uma casa nesta vila foi uma decisão que surgiu naturalmente?
You live in Nazaré for a long period every year. Buying a house in this town was a decision that came up naturally?
Apaixonámo-nos pela Nazaré no primeiro dia em que nos encontrámos com o Fred. Era suposto ficarmos uma semana, mas ficámos 3 meses. Acabámos por comprar uma casa.
As pessoas são muito simpáticas, a comida é ótima e o estilo de vida é realmente relaxante. Aqui sentimo-nos em casa.
We fall in love with Nazaré the first day we came together with Fred. We were supposed to stay 1 week, we stayed 3 months. At the end we bought a house.
The people are really nice, the food is great, and the lifestyle is really relax. We feel like home here.
Este ano ganhaste o troféu “Biggest Wave” na categoria feminina do WSL Big Wave Awards, com uma onda surfada na Praia do Norte. Como te sentiste?
This year you won the “Biggest Wave” trophy for the female category at the WSL Big Wave Awards, with a wave surfed at Praia do Norte. How did that fell?
Encaro isso como uma recompensa por todo o tempo que passamos aqui. Tentamos não pensar muito em prémios ou recordes. Queremos continuar a aprender e a superar os nossos limites. Se algo acontecer no final, é uma cereja no topo do bolo.
I take it as a reward for all the time we have spent here. We try to not think too much of all the awards and record stuff. We want to keep learning and pushing our limits. If something come at the end it is like a cheery on the cake.
Gostarias que existisse uma competição feminina no “Nazaré Challenge”?
Would you like to see a women’s competition at the “Nazaré Challenge”?
Claro. Na minha opinião, a Nazaré é a maior onda do mundo e devíamos ter uma competição de tow-in aqui. Seria também uma boa oportunidade para as mulheres que querem competir com os melhores.
Mas também é um desafio fantástico surfar na remada em alguns dos dias de ondas grandes.
Não imagino um circuito mundial de ondas grandes sem um evento na Nazaré.
Adoraria fazer parte de uma competição de surf na remada para mulheres! É algo que realmente poderia impulsionar o desporto.
Of course. In my opinion Nazaré is the biggest wave in the world and we should have a tow contest here. It would also be an opportunity for the women that want it to compete with the best guys.
But it is also an amazing challenge to paddle on some of the big days.
I don’t see a big wave world tour without an event in Nazaré.
I would really love to be part of a women paddle contest ! It is something that could really push the sport.

Which are your biggest fears when surfing Praia do Norte?
Surfar em frente ao promontório nos dias gigantes é assustador.
Uma situação como a do Ross Clarke-Jones nas pedras (depois de um wipe out na época passada) é provavelmente o que mais me assusta, embora ele tenha lidado com isso “à patrão”!!
Surfing in front of the cliff on the giant days is scary.
The Ross Clark Jones action in the rocks is probably what scares me the most, even if he has handled it like boss!!
