Toby Cunningham nasceu a 12 de agosto de 1977 em San Diego, Califórnia. Foi a primeira pessoa a vencer o Billabong XXL Big Wave Award na remada em 2003, com uma onda de 56 pés surfada em Todos os Santos, México, que na altura estabeleceu o recorde mundial na categoria.
Persegue ondas grandes desde os 13 anos de idade, numa procura incessável pela superação. Foi esta motivação que o levou a viver na Austrália, Hawai, África do Sul e agora Portugal. Sentiu-se em casa desde a sua chegada à Nazaré, onde vive 6 meses por ano. Já viajou por mais de 50 países e acredita que a Nazaré é o lugar mais subvalorizado no mundo, não apenas devido ao surf, mas também ao povo fantástico, cenários naturais, gastronomia e qualidade de vida incrível.
Born on August 12, 1977 in San Diego, California, Toby Cunningham was the first person to win the Billabong XXL Big Wave paddle award in 2003 for a 56 foot wave off of Todos Santos, Mexico, setting a world record at that time.
Chasing big waves since he was 13 years old, Toby was constantly searching for the next level of surfing. This was his motivation for living in West Australia, Hawaii, South Africa and now Portugal. Upon his arrival here, Toby immediately felt at home and has since spent 6 months out of the year here in Nazaré. He’s traveled to over 50 countries so far and he believes this is the most underrated place in the world, not just for surfing but for the beautiful people, scenery, food and the incredible quality of life here in Nazaré.
